What is a Fresh 48 Session and is it for me?

Los Angeles Newborn Photographer

Being a Los Angeles newborn photographer means we offer an array of options for our clients, not just the standard basic portraiture. At Little Blue World we embrace the beauty of everyday life by creating intimate and authentic images that will show everyone how much you love your world and the people in it. This, in particular, means we absolutely love those raw and genuine moments for our sessions, and for us, newborns are the complete definition of that.

Our background with newborns spans from years of experience in all realms: posed, lifestyle (documentary), and hospital portraits. Although we have mostly moved away from perfectly posed portraiture, it’s only because our passion is in those real moments. For us, a Fresh 48 session is the most raw session you can experience with us.

What is a “Fresh 48” session?

A Fresh 48 session takes place in your postpartum hospital room, or, if you have a home / birth center birth, it would be in your home, within 48 hours of baby’s birth. The intention of it is to capture those very first hours of baby’s life, family bonding, the meeting of new siblings, grandparents, or just the intimacy of parents bonding with their newborn.

What does a typical Fresh 48 session look like?

Pasadena Newborn Photographer

Our workflow captures intimate moments with baby, including breastfeeding or bottle feeding, details like feet, bracelets, and belly button. Also changing diapers, visiting friends and family (if the timing is right!), special gifts from loved ones for baby, and our favorite, family bonding.

How do I know if it’s right for me?

Do you like documentary-style raw moments? Or do you prefer something more polished?

Here’s a quick and easy rundown to help you decide!

Fresh 48 Sessions:

  • Shot within 48 hours of baby’s birth.

  • We shoot all over Los Angeles, Pasadena, Santa Clarita, Antelope Valley, and Ventura, so the location of your session doesn’t matter!

  • No setup, no prepping, no planning, we just show up and capture what’s going on in your postpartum location to document those first hours after baby’s birth.

  • Session lasts about 30-60 minutes depending on package.

  • We prefer everything as raw as possible, nothing polished. Examples would be baby and mom in their postpartum attire, bracelets still on, belly button still tied off with clamp, maybe even their very first bath.

  • This is also typically the time where breast-feeding moms really start working with baby to latch and get colostrum, so if mom is open to it, we love capturing some of those first breast-feeding and bonding moments.

Newborn Sessions:

  • Shot at 7-30 days old on location in client’s home in the Los Angeles, Pasadena, Santa Clarita, AV, and Ventura areas.

  • Is also shot mainly documentary style, but more polished with parents and siblings dressed and ready to go.

  • Less very raw moments, but still lots of intimate moments.

  • Includes a couple soft poses and props with baby, including a wrap, optional headband, basket, and some textures.

  • Sessions are 30-90 minutes depending on the package you select.

  • More traditional looking newborn session as it’s more polished.

How do I book when I don’t know when baby is coming?

It is actually much easier for us when you book in advance, regardless of knowing your date or not! If you have a scheduled C-section we can set up a date right away. If you’re being induced then we’ll block our calendar for the two days surrounding your induction, because you never know when baby will come! If you’re having a natural birth then we make sure one of our photographers is free within a 2 week radius of your due date. Because there are two of us, it makes it easier for us to for sure get someone to you within 48 hours of your birth!

Have more questions or want to book?

What’s right for you may not be right for someone else, and that’s ok! We love documenting newborns, whichever way is right for you and your family! If you’re still unsure, please feel free to reach out to us so we can discuss what would be best for you and your family! Ready to book?
